Warped Wing brews up White IPA for Cincinnati Beer Week

Warped Wing hop smuggler

Warped Wing Brewing Co. has created a special beer for Cincinnati Beer Week, which kicks off on Friday. (Feb. 13)

The Dayton brewer will release Hop Smuggler White IPA, a 6.7 percent beer made with coriander, grains of paradise and citrus peels, at the Cincy Winter Beerfest and at the brewery.

"Cincy has welcomed us in as one of their own and we wanted to do something special for beer week to say thank you," Warped Wing head of sales and marketing Nick Bowman said in a news release issued Monday. "There’s a lot of history between our two cities and that was the inspiration for Hop Smuggler. We wanted to create a beer that was inspired by a story that had a natural connection between Dayton and Cincinnati. The Miami canal was that perfect story."

A special cask tapping also is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 16 at Arnold's Bar and Grill in Cincinnati.

Warped Wing brews up special beer for Cincy Beer Week

Dayton craft brewery Warped Wing Brewing Company has created a unique beer to celebrate Cincinnati Beer Week.

warped wing logoThe Miami Canal connecting Dayton and Cincinnati was completed in 1829. It was a busy transport route carrying passengers and goods to and from these bustling Ohio cities. Legend has it that a group of smugglers used this waterway cloaked under the cover of darkness to trade for hops and beer. Hop Smuggler White IPA is dedicated to those risk-takers whose hops, beer and bravery bound these two fine cities together forever. Raise a pint of Hop Smuggler IPA. And toast to your neighbor to the north or south.

Hop Smuggler White IPA is yellow with orange highlights. It features citrus and fruity aromas and flavors from the Vic Secret and Centennial hops. The malt character is light and nutty. Spices such as Coriander, Grains of Paradise and citrus peels are added to accentuate the citrus flavor and aroma. The beer finishes very bitter. The Belgian yeast character compliments the fruity character of the hops and spices. ABV: 6.7% IBU: 96

“Cincy has welcomed us in as one of their own and we wanted to do something special for beer week to say thank you. There’s a lot of history between our two cities and that was the inspiration for Hop Smuggler.” Says Nick Bowman, head of Sales & Marketing. “We wanted to create a beer that was inspired by a story that had a natural connection between Dayton and Cincinnati. The Miami canal was that perfect story”.

Hop Smuggler will be released for the first time on Friday night at Cincy Beer Fest. It will be featured at events throughout Beer Week with a special cask tapping at Arnold’s on Monday, February 16th at 7pm. Limited edition signed prints of the label art will be available for sale with an opportunity to meet and greet with Tom Post, Artist and John Pattison, Creative Director. The beer will be tapped at the brewery as well on Friday and available for sale in draught only to taverns, restaurants and select retail outlets the following week.
